Clear Water Distilling Tasting and Aroma Wheel

Take Your Senses On A journey

Welcome to the Clear Water Distilling Tasting & Aroma Wheel – let us guide you on the journey to becoming a liquor snob.

Using a tasting wheel is a structured way to appreciate the complexity of flavors and aromas. It is a valuable tool for both beginners and experienced tasters – helping you discover & describe the nuances of the spirits you love.

How To Conduct Your Tasting:

1. Set the Mood & Gather Materials:

  • Choose a well-lit neutral environment – free from strong odors
  • Hard copy of tasting wheel
  • Clear Water Distilling’s Spirits
  • Palate cleansers
  • Clean glasses to hold your sample
  • A notepad for record

2. Prepare Your Sample:

  • Pour the spirit into the glass
  • Take a moment to observe the appearance, color, and viscosity during the pour

4. Sniff and Observe:

  • Begin your evaluation by swirling the liquid gently in the glass
  • Legs what sticks to the glass like a film—+++
  • Use your tasting wheel to identify the different aromas you detect
  • Note the intensity, quality, and subtleties of the scents

5. Taste and Analyze:

  • Take a small sip and let it coat your palate.
  • Swirl for a few seconds to get over any ethanol response
  • Pay attention to the initial flavors and any changes that occur as you continue to taste
  • Refer to your tasting wheel or kit to describe the taste characteristics, such as sweetness, acidity, bitterness, or other relevant descriptors

6. Assess the Finish:

  • Breathe through your mouth
  • After swallowing, evaluate the aftertaste or finish.
  • Note any lingering flavors, sensations, or nuances that emerge.
  • Take a 2nd sip to reveal more flavors

7. Record Your Findings:

  • Write down your observations and tasting notes.
  • Be as specific as possible, mentioning the aromas, flavors, and any personal preferences or impressions.

8. Compare and Reflect:

  • Compare your notes and observations to the references on your tasting wheel or kit.
  • Reflect on your overall impressions and any unique qualities you identified.

9. Practice and Learn:

  • The more you use tasting wheels or kits, the more you’ll develop your sensory evaluation skills. Practice regularly and try different Clear Water Spirits to expand your palate and refine your tasting abilities.
